KILO 3/5 Gathers at Pendleton

Here's at least a partial list of vets who ventured to Camp Pendleton this past February for the 1st MarDiv's 60th Anniversary. A little different program this year, shorter, no live fire, but still a great time. Check out the web site for the latest report and photo/video presentation of the group and some of its events.

Many thanks as always to Bob and Rene Tilley for hosting the great evening at their house in Fallbrook. And, thanks Rene for setting up the whale-watching tour, even if the main attraction failed to show.

You can count on this event again next year (see below for tentative schedule). Check out the Old Breed News for early announcements on housing deals and the exact itinerary.

Next Stop--Orlando, FL! A large turnout is expected at the annual reunion of the First Marine Division Association this July 4-7, in Orlando. The site is the Marriott World Center, which promises to be a truly outstanding venue. Bring the kids and grandkids, there's tons of stuff to do! And, the room rate is only $88/night.

ALL HANDS: The K Company banquet will be on Thursday, July 5, at about 1800, in the Grand Ballrooms 5 & 6. Looks like at least 100 total vets, families, and guests. Let's especially see a solid turnout from all the company's vets who live in Florida. Even if you can't make the entire reunion, come on over for the dinner that night. But let us know you're coming--as usual, there's a strict headcount.

If you're not a member of the 1st Marine Division Association, join up on the KILO 3/5 web site:

http://www.kilo35usmc.org

or check out the Division Association's site: www.1stmarinedivisionassociation.org

By the way,
Kilo's Ron McCarville has been appointed co-chair of the Association's membership committee and you can expect to hear from him soon. Join up!

We'll do our annual informal dinner get-together on Saturday night. The current plan is to leave Orlando by bus (you can take your car, if you wish) about 3:00 PM and drive about 45 miles east, to DeLand. DeLand is sort of like a trip back to middle America in the '50s. DeLand was recently selected "Best Main Street" and "Friendliest Small Town" by Florida Monthly magazine. We'll stop by to meet former Gunny Chuck Love, who owns a gun shop with one of the most unique collections of USMC memorabilia (we're talking REAL old stuff). .

After the tour of about 45 minutes, it's back on the bus and into downtown. We're going to eat at Yesterday's, a no-frills pub similar to what we usually hit. We've got live music lined up from a group that plays there every week. But, in keeping with the restaurant's theme, this will be pretty sedate, with a good selection of jazz and Dixieland.

After about 2 hours there, we'll form up to return to Orlando. I'm asking all the VN vets who can, to chip in $20 to help cover the cost of the bus (estimated at about $470) so we can treat the WW 11 vets and their wives to a free trip. Everyone covers their own dinner on this one.

MIA and FNG Report The company continues to locate more and more Vietnam era vets and now we are a good -deal of activity from Cold War and Gulf Campaign vets as- well. The web site has been expanded to include company vets from ANY era. You don't have to have trigger time to join this group, 'cause we know everyone went through the same prep work. This is truly becoming the "Band of Brothers" several of us envisioned just a few \,ears ago.

Breaking News

Our Protestant chaplain during Operation Union and the summer operations in 1967, CAPT Eli Takesian, USN (Ret), was recently featured in the Marine Corps Gazette (April 2001) with a fine article, "Ministering to Marines in a Sustained Combat Environment." Father Takesian was a popular figure in the summer of '67--he shared any leftover wine from services held in the field on Sundays and the old USMC tattoo on the right shoulder reminded us of his "trigger time" as a young Marine corporal in Korea.

Ron McCarville forwarded the following information: Amazon.com\books ... search for "Not Going Home Alone" or "Kirschke." Book is about early RVN, with 3/5, especially 81mm and H/2/5.

We're finally seeing some action in terms of getting 1968 unit diaries. Johnny "Pappy" Furr, good to his word, has started collecting this data from Quantico. He could use some help, so call him at (765) 869-5719 (IN). Pappy also sent down some outstanding announcement posters we'll have up in Orlando that should make locating the K/3/5 hospitality suite and banquet much easier. Get there early enough and pick up one of his other contributions--K/3/5 note pads. Thanks, Pappy!

Emmett Queen has been designated the web master for the 1st MarDiv Ass'n web site. Now we're squared away! Well done, Emmett.

Closing Comments

Many thanks to Ron Heath for the newly redesigned company web site. We continue to attract many new members. We remain a fairly unorganized group, with no officers, no agendas, no dues. There is no movement on the horizon to change any of that. However, if we want to take this a step farther, we need everyone's help in making it happen.

Show up next month in Orlando and see what you've been missing. Kilo 3/5 always was, and remains, a tight knit Band of Brothers. You're always welcome.

Kilo, Out.
