I got your location from Richard Hoffman of Lima 3/5. Cool Website! I'm member of 3/4 Assn. Was with Mike 3/4 67-68, plus flew as AO. Question: Do you have a buddy search or some other way to locate those that knew KIA's? I work at the VET Center in Jacksonville, FL as a volunteer Service Officer for the DAV. Another volunteer is the mother of one of your KIA's. Details: 1/Lt. Mark CRAIGE was KIA 12 Oct 1970 SSN:264-80-3055. If you have anyone who knew him please let me know--she's not on the web, I'll serve as go-between.

We just had our reunion in Houston two weeks ago. It was GREAT! I finally saw people I was close to 31+ years ago. One just retired as Sgt. Maj.

I have thought a long time before posting this and just where to post it. I think this is the place. We all lived for mail call, and this is important.

A few short months ago I met a guy named Ron Heath on the internet. He lives in Alaska (far away) and I don't really remember him, even though we were there at the same time in VN and shared some of the same shit. Since 1968 I had lived with some demons that never had faces or names or never were visible to me, but kept me at bay, none the less. After a lot of e-mail, discussion, and deliberation (pushing) he created a site for us, kilo 3/5.

If I told you it was important for me to have this in my life, that would be mild. It would be a lie. It is damn important to me. I could tell you about all the marines I have met since the inception of the site, but all you have to do is look around at the roster. Brother's all. Every single man a brother. A Marine. Kilo 3/5.

I thank Ron Heath and everyone who contributes to this site by just visiting it. If you visit and are moved enough to say something, do. The whole Bn. is on line, that is a great accomplishment to all the web masters and people who help to put these things together. I love you all and you are always brothers.

Semper Fi,
Ron McCarville

Ron....I share your appreciation for the site and I want to let Ron Heath
know how much I appreciate his hard work. I look at the site every day hoping to see
faces from the past. I lost all of my pictures when I was medi-vaced so I encourage
everyone to send photos if possible. Since I was in the C.P. I am especially looking for Akino,Cline and English. Hope to find them soon, we're not getting any younger you know. I would also like to hear from Lt.Smith and Gunny Sora......

This is a long shot but what the heck. In your communications with former Marines, could you see if anyone would be interested in doing UXO (unexploded ordinance) removal in Laos. There's a lot of it still around over near the border with VN. Went out to Sepone last Feb and there was a group there working. A former British Navy officer was heading up a team of local Lao people. He told me it's laying around exposed. They just walk through an area, mark everything with a little flag. Some of it they blow in place and other stuff they bring in to a disposal area and blow up.

Some of the Lao folks told my girlfriend that he was making about 10,000 USD per month. True or not, I can't verify.

A friend of mine was working in Vieng Chan or Vientienne recently and knows some folks at the US Embassy there. They want to get some US people involved in removal work. Now it's all European NGOs heading up programs in Laos.

Just a thought. Most likely no one wants anything to do with that any more.

Is it possible for you to put it in the web-site? He plans on being in San Diego. he is a marine, pre Vietnam. I've invited him to be our guest at Kilo's banquet. He was a little relunctant, but I told him he's helping tell our legacy.

Ashburnham, Mass. will dedicate their Korean &Vietnam memorial on June 17th, 2000. There were 2 KIA's from this small town. They were both Marines both from the 5th Mar. Reg. Pfc. William (Bill) Bresnahan, Kilo 3/5,WIA on 5/13/67, died on hospital ship 5/26/67,operation Union 1. Pfc. Thomas Sweeney, KIA 3/31/68. He was in H&S, Co. Battalion not known to this writer at this time. If anyone knew these Marines and would like to send regards it would be greatly appreciated. Bill still has a sister Lorraine. I (Paul Malboeuf), met with his parents in 1985, both are deceased now. Chris Gompert & I visited his sister a few years back. There was a call made to Bill's mother who was very sick at the time from a Marine that served with Bill but she couldn't remember who it was and said he would call back.

Still a mystery: A small Texas flag was left at his grave in 1999?

"The Few"

At times events happen without thought or by GOD'S will. It is with
a great deal of sadness I learn of K 3/5 Marines, or any Marines
attaining the level of ultimate sacrifice at any time, anywhere.
Young men, who were vital and alive a few days ago are now guarding
the gates of heaven with too many of our brothers at this time. A new
group has just entered a very sacred site in our hearts and minds.
Our thoughts are with the families and friends of those that gave
their lives doing what we did a very long time ago, but facing no enemy.
It is hard to reconcile and very hard to live with. All of us are heavy
in heart and grieve for those lost.

My name is William Myers and I have just completed the book, Honor the Warrior. It is a collection of mostly first person accounts of Marines in combat in Vietnam. One of the stories is concerned with Operation Swift and involves most units of the Fifth Marines. The title of this chapter is The Valley of the Shadow. The major contributors to the story are Joe Tenney and Dave Blizzard of K-3-5. Other contributors were Charles Jenkins of D-1-5, Harold Wadley and Wayne Carr of H-2-5 and David Ross of VMO-2.

You will also recognize the names of many Marines from all companies of the Fifth Marines in this story and on the medals lists.

I have the books and they are ready for shipment. The book is a hardcover edition with a dust jacket. It is a quality work and will sell for $25.00 a copy plus $3.00 for P&H. Initially I will only sell the books directly from this address.

I will inscribe each book, as you desire if you desire. It is my hope that everyone whose name appears in the book will have a chance to read it. This book was written for Marines by a Marine. When you see it you will immediately understand.

The following is a review of the book that will appear in Leatherneck Magazine.

Honor the Warrior: The United States Marine Corps in Vietnam. William L. Myers Redoubt Press, 183 Steiner Road, # 117, Lafayette, LA 70508-6000 294 pages, map, appendices, hardcover, $25.00 plus $3.00 S & H.

This is an anthology of what the author believes is the finest writing about the experiences of Marines in Vietnam. After reading his selections I agree, it certainly is what he claims for it. It is chock full of splendid reading material for that Marine interested in what the "older generation” went through. And, aren't we all? Myers has not only managed to gather together seventeen incredibly readable personal accounts but he has personally added a massive amount of additional material that we all want but seldom see in any other gathering of this type. Some anthologies do have important annotations but most are concerned more with units and problems, but not so much about people. And, in the opinion of many, people are what war is all about. His research about the people in each chapter adds greatly to what one must know about the action described. It is evident that the author has a firm grip on the subject matter. Just his annotations alone are well worth the price of the book. I shudder when I think of the amount of research he went through to gather all this data in one book. An extraordinary effort and believe me well worth your serious consideration and it is very reasonably priced.

Myers is widely known as a profound and erudite bookish sort who has a marvelous writing style of his own. A retired high school teacher, and also a former football coach, "Billy" has been able to convey what it was like for those who served during that horrible conflict. The author is, and for many years has been, a collector of important Vietnam material. This prodigious effort includes much of what he has collected and digested. When you read his book you will realize that he is not only a Marine veteran but has never lost his pride in that service. Now, thirty years after the fact, these men are starting to realize that they were the heroes, not the unwashed mob that tried to debase them while they served their country. It was a terrible war for all concerned and, in this writer’s opinion, it should have never happened. But it did and it is about time the veterans finally had their "day" and say. Bill Myers makes his point, very well indeed.

The book is very well presented. The dust jacket is about as "pretty" as one will find-as decorous as that beauty by John W. Thomason, Jr. for Salt Winds-and Gobi Dust. Billy has pictured the symbols of his treasured relationship as a Marine, including his "dog tags." In addition, Billy has provided us with, not only a complete listing of "winners” of the Navy Cross but those equally brave Marines who were awarded the Silver Star. Where possible, and in most instances, he has included the name, service number, unit, date for the award, age of the individual and even his hometown address. You "can't hardly get that kind of data” anywhere, which includes those men who we could never do without-the "Docs." If you ever cut yourself on a C-ration can, Doc was there. And for worse times, as some of you already know. This book is a treasure for everyone and I expect it will get widespread reading from all those who appreciate what our lads did thirty some years ago.

Established in 1946 in honor of Marines who died during World War II, the Association, Club and Hotel offers a variety of educational and charitable services to Marines – active duty and former. The Club is private – open only to active duty and former military. The beautiful guest rooms of the hotel begin at only $80 per night. This year the Association awarded $50,000 in scholarships to Marine dependent children and spouses. The Association often comes to the aid of Marine families in time of need. We find that many Marines are unaware of our services and we wish to reach them with this information. A connection with your link would help us provide our services to Marines and their families.

Hi, I know this is a Vietnam vets page but I'm looking for survivors or
relatives of survivors of K/3/5 from WWII who may have served with my father
on Peleliu and Okinawa and later in China. His name was Cpl Nicholas Kasun
and served under CPT Andrew Haldane and LT Stanley. If you could lead me to
another place to search, I would appreciate it. My email address is
mailto:mkasun6729@aol.com?subject=From_Mail_Call_Page_Kilo35_website. This is a great site you've created for a great company
of men. My regards to you all. Mike Kasun

Great piece on Tommy Winget in The Daily Review, May 8, 2000. Describes his
experience of losing Michael Green on Mother's Day, 1969 and the attempt to
contact members of Green's family.

All Hands-

Myers McCray, 3rd Plt 10/66-11/67, located and welcomed to our ranks this
past weekend in Ft. Lauderdale. Welcoming party consisted of Dick Dickerson,
Rich Wilson, Rich's wife Dawn, and myself. After 33 yrs, it was a great
get-together.

Willie was showing pictures from Operation Union I and trying to identify two
grunts, who along with Willie, had tracked down and killed a chicken.
Looking at the picture, Myers easily identified himself and went on to tell
stories about the "crazy guy from New Jersey who had never seen a live
chicken, much less caught or killed one." Enter McCray to save the day. (It
should be noted that Kilo was in the middle of a 3-day period during which we
could not be resupplied and everyone was on their own to find food.)

All Hands-

Latest attempt at the KILO-gram was handed off to Dick Dickerson this past
weekend. Dick will copy and have in the mail sometime later in June.
Thirty-one FNGs are included in that newsletter and mailing, so the ranks are
rapidly expanding.

See you all in San Diego (be sure to let me know, SOON, if you are coming,
'cause we have to turn in an accurate count for the dinner on Thursday nite.).

THE JUNGLE IN OUR MINDS

The other day I had a conversation with a fellow Marine I spent some time with in Viet Nam. He told me in all the thirty some years since he left the Corps he never talked about any events or action that he was involved in during his tour in Viet Nam to anyone at all. He felt guilty about that to a certain point.
Family, friends, co-workers, no one at all, ever found out about his involvement in the Viet Nam War
He kept silent, even sometimes to the point, of not filling out an application for work about his prior Marine history.
I would like to tell you that he is a rare case. He is not. I did it myself. It wasn't that we were ashamed of our deeds or actions, just not appreciated very much at all by anyone in particular around us at the time
He reflected to an event in his past that has bothered him a great deal. Killing another human being. He certainly understands our situation at the time, but latter years in life do things to a man that as a boy you don't think about and don't understand when it happens around you.
We have both seen the killers around us that had lost it long before joining the Corps. The war just justified what they loved. Marines are not killers of women and children for the sake of killing. WE do what we have to do to keep each other alive and survive. Complete a mission and gain ground.
There is a jungle we live in, " IN OUR MINDS ". Sometimes we let some in, not many, but some. He let me in the other day and told me of his grief and pain. THE GREAT DOUBT.
Brothers are brothers and we never give one up for any reason. NOT NOW, NOT EVER. I can not make it easier for him, but I can explain the pain. I have been there, as have most of us.
It is a sick feeling when it happens and bravado for a time after. That is fleeting and disappears very
Soon after arriving home and seeing the reality of the old hometown and strange stairs from people and you hear the whispers behind your back.
Take heed brothers, we need each other and that is a fact. Never doubt we are here for comfort and salvation.

MARINES DO NOT LEAVE THEIR DEAD OR WOUNDED,EVER.

Hello Jason,
I am a former Marine from the Viet Nam era. I am looking for a fellow Marine that I served with in the Nam. We were in KILO CO., 3RD. BN, 5TH. MARINES, 1ST. MAR DIV. during 1967-68. The man'sname is James E.Brandenburg. Our 1ST. SGT. recalls he was from WI. or MI. Our unit has a site at http://www.geocities.com/kilo35usmc/
We are constantly looking for former members of our unit. It helps most guy's to connect again and put some closure to the events we took partin during the war.
Some are so far out they never make it back. I found your name on THE FEW site and after putting in your hometown, you popped up. There is a James E. listed in the directory in your area, Menomonie,WI. As a former Marine I was in hope that you might be able to help us a little. If you receive this message and are willing to take a little time to help us it would be greatly appreciated.
Please e-mail me if you are willing. If not , no problem.

SGT. Ron McCarville.

Dear Ron,
Sure I'll help. Since I am now an over the road truck

and in case this individual is your former buddy, I am
sending his address and phone.

If I can be of any further assistance, please mail me
back. Just be paitent if you do. I don't always make
it to a computer when I am home, but will eventually
reply.

Dear Brothers,

It is with great regret that I have found BRANDENBURG. He passed away on
June 4th of 2000. I tried to talk with his son and mother but could not do it. I broke
down, I am still crying. The attached message was a long shot to find him and I did, much to my dismay we have passed each other on a trail we all follow and he was at
point for us and now lies with other heros.
Chip, I am very sorry I could not find him before he passed. I will live with that for along while old brother. My heart is very heavy at this time and I need some space to reflect on our past history to put thing's in perspective.

Both you and Benny take care and SEMPER-FI .

From "Doc" Perez 7/17/2000

The good news is that I have a grandson that just graduated from USMC
bootcamp. His name is David Campos,Jr. He's the 3rd generation with the
Corps. (See what I started!)

The bad news is that I won't be able to make this reunion. We have a family reunion
for our aging parents that everyone thought would be wise to attend as they are getting feeble and it might be the last time everyone gets together.

I tried to work out a slip away for a day or so but got voted
down, big time. So I've set my sights on the January get together at Pendelton.
Say hello to everyone there, body may not be there , but the spirit will.

Enjoy San Diego!

Sisters & Brothers,

You must first please check out this web site: www.wwiiveteransrun.com

If you'd like, if not please read ahead.

This past Thursday, my wife, a friend of ours - who happens to be a sister
of a Colorado POW/MIA - and myself were traveling south from Denver to Pagosa
Springs, late morning. We see what, to us has been a famalier sight in the
past, someone walking along the highway an American and a POW/MIA Flag, and
he's kind of jogging.

Naturally, being a "Walker" involving the POW/MIA Issue - The Last Patrol -
we pulled over and once I saw that he had a Marine hat on and a t-shirt with
wording about the "WWII Memorial", I said "Leave it to the MARINES to take
care of things", or words to that effect..

Come to find out he's running cross-country to raise awareness to the WWII
Memorial, with more information on the website.

Also, he and I were in the same Battalion/Regiment, he was with India 3/5
and I was with K 3/5 (hey fellow brothers of K 3/5 what a coincedence), and he got
hit and medevac on Operation Union of which the whole Battalion was a part.

Well we left him on his journey as we continued on ours till today, Friday,
on our way back to Denver, we stopped again. I walked with him for a bit and
we chatted some more of our time(s) in the same area just with a different
company and even then during down times there we were anyway.

Anyway, Please try and get the word out, especially if anyone is on ahead of
where he will be traveling. Any, but especialy, MORAL SUPPORT will be needed
to help him complete the Mission.

The support vehicle cell phone number is 1-612-845-1022, but please make sure
to limit calls to anything that might be of benefit to them, at last sighting
there is only one person that is driving the support vehicle and Tom who is
doing the running.

Again please go to the website and you will be able to keep up with his
current progess. He is just a couple/few days out of the Colorado
Springs/Denver area, those of you who receive this, we need to get something
together, right quick and get the word out to the east of us.

Semper Fi !

Richard Campos
